1. About the English Department

The English Department of the School of Basic Education was established in the academic year 2003-2004 in the city of Sulaimani to meet the needs of a rapidly growing market in Iraqi Kurdistan following the overthrow of Saddam’s regime which ushered in a new era of political and economic development in Iraq in general and Iraqi Kurdistan region in particular.

The English Department offers a four-year undergraduate major in English language and is currently distinguished by a relatively flourishing faculty both quantitatively and qualitatively. The faculty members are committed to communicative and student-centered teaching and scholarship; many of them have earned their degrees in TESOL/TEFL specialties and some of them hold academic titles as high as assistant professors (equivalent to Associate professor) who also offer a PhD course in Applied Linguistics in the department.

The program in our department is tailored to prepare students to become basic school teachers to teach the young and the adolescents with English language courses, basics of English literature, pedagogy, principles of education and psychology, cultural awareness, adaptability, and relevance to the teaching contexts of the Kurdistan region market. Thus, they are intended to enhance their skills in English language pedagogy. The students take courses in speaking, writing, English literature, linguistics, English grammar, methods of teaching English, developmental psychology, principles of education, evaluation and measurement, and testing and/or assessment. After graduation, the students are eligible to become basic school English teachers.

d. To infuse confidence in the students that the skills they acquire in the department will bring them better prospects for appropriate jobs and that what they learn and acquire will be rewarding.

4. Postgraduate Studies

For the first since its foundation, the department launched a Master’s program in Applied linguistics and TESOL to further knowledge in the field of English language teaching in Iraqi Kurdistan and fill a gap already felt which consisted in the lack of sufficient faculty and staff teaching in the department. The MA program started in ………. By admitting………students who were awarded their degrees two years after. Moreover, in response to the growing need of the department’s staff to complete their PhD studies in the field and make the department a center for furthering science and knowledge in applied linguistics and fostering English language teaching, a PhD program was embarked upon in autumn 2015. The first round admitted eight students; six for linguistics and two for English literature.

Notably, the MA program is completed in two years; two intensive courses are taken during the first year and a research requiring originality is completed in the second year. Then, the degree is awarded upon approval by the council of Sulaimani University and its president.

The PhD program, however, is completed between three to four years (extensions included). Two intensive courses are taken during the first year and a research requiring originality is completed in the remaining two to three years. Then, the degree is awarded upon approval by the council of Sulaimani University and its president.
