History

In 2003–2004, the College of Teachers was established to meet the needs of the Ministry of Education—Kurdistan Regional Government for well qualified and experienced teachers in the basic education schools and to supply the educational institutions of the Kurdistan Region with human resources. Later in 2005–2006, to correspond with its counterparts in other universities in Kurdistan and to prepare competent teachers for the stage 1-9. The name of the College of Teachers was changed to the College of Basic Education. In 2011–2012, within the modifications that occurred to the strategies of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, the name was altered to (The School of Basic Education), which was again reversed to its former title (College of Basic Education) in 2015–2016.

At the outset, studying in the college was not divided according to specialties, but general majors were studied, including scientific and humanitarian subjects. Later, the college was divided into several departments, such as the Department of English Language, Mathematics and Computer Skills, Social Sciences, and Physical Education. Back in 2011–2012, Mathematics and Computer skills were separated to form independent departments, and Kindergarten and Arts departments were founded. Then, in 2012–2013, Kurdish Department, and later, in 2016–2017 Department of Special Education were established to accept applicants.

In 2012–2013, according to the demands of the Ministry of Education, evening classes started in the departments of Social Sciences and Computer Skills to enroll teachers of the ministry to enhance their abilities and skills. Later, evening classes were given in the other departments of the College of Basic Education: the English department 2013–2014, Kindergarten 2014–2015, Arts and Special Education 2016–2017 and the Kurdish Department 2017–2018.

In the beginning, there were two semesters per academic year, but since 2008–2009, the college has applied an annual system, which will be decimated in 2023–2024, and after that, all the stages in all the departments will come under the Bologna Process, which has already been used in the Computer Skill and Mathematics departments since 2019–2020. In fact, all the departments of the College of Basic Education have implemented the Bologna Process since 2020–2021, but only the final stages in a few departments still apply the annual system, which will end in 2023–2024.
The College of Basic Education provides morning and evening classes, and students are enrolled in all the departments through two systems: the Zankoline and Direct systems. Students are admitted to all the departments of the college through the Zankoline system, except for the Department of Art, which enrolls students directly.
