The Department of Social Sciences is one of the departments of the College of Basic Education. It was established in the academic year 2003–2004. And in the academic year 2012–2013, the evening study was also established.

The department of social sciences is a group of science specializations in various fields of life and different specializations. They study (history, geography, and a group of educational and psychological sciences) from the curricula of schools (1–9) in the primary school in order for the students of this department to know all the curricula of the Ministry of Education. The postgraduate studies (MA and PhD) in our department are of great importance, and it is another affiliated service that went with teaching in 2005-2006.

Department Vision:

The main goals of the department are: first, to educate a scientifically literate and well-rounded generation by utilizing modern scientific, educational, and psychological methods, secondly, to provide high-quality teaching and training to develop professionals in various fields, and to enhance the scientific ability, knowledge, and skills of students in all areas of education, psychology, and social sciences. Furthermore, it also seeks to address the specific social issues facing Kurdish society through its curriculum and research initiatives, and to contribute to the development of the Kurdish community as a whole.

Department Mission:

The social sciences department attempts to promote students through scientific methods and modern education by focusing on a scientific process in which students are given information in culture, history, geography, education, and psychology. It is important to indicate that the aim and characteristics of the Department of Social Sciences emphasize the teaching of the subjects that are taught in primary schools (1–9), including subjects like history, geography, skills, and social values, as well as learning more about subjects that the Ministry of Education of the Kurdistan Regional Government has decided are part of the curriculum.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon completing the designed semesters, the graduates will be able to do the following:

  • Become teachers in schools in the Ministry of Education for grades 1–9.
  • Become social researchers in schools and address problems that affect education in schools.
  • Become researchers in their field of specialization (teaching methods, education, psychology, program organization, geography, history), because they write scientific research in the first stages, and in the fourth stage, they write scientific research.
  • Serve in the field of service offices, especially education and upbringing offices.

Study Methods:

The department uses the Bologna Process. The teaching methods include lectures and reports. Assessment is conducted through semester examinations, midterm examinations, quizzes, and report writing. Moreover, during the fourth year, our students will undergo teaching practice in primary schools, where they will have the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired in a real-world setting. They will enter classrooms and teach in a practical way. This experience not only allows them to gain practical teaching skills but also prepares them to become effective and successful teachers in the future.

In general, the language of instruction in the department is Kurdish.

The duration of study in this department is four years full-time that are divided into eight semesters.
