This department is one of the most important departments of the College of Basic Education at Sulaimani University; it was established in 2011–2012. The department is currently a very important and necessary department because it provides teachers of mathematics for the Ministry of Education, and graduates of this department can take on responsibilities in the education sector.

Department Vision:

This department works to use mathematical science in such a way that it can meet the needs of society in the field of mathematics and tries to build bridges with its counterparts in world-renowned universities to improve the academic level of teachers and students, to connect our department with the labor market and to provide necessary information to students to find job opportunities.

Department Mission:

The main message of the Department of Mathematical Sciences is to introduce students to mathematics and education through teaching and providing various subjects related to mathematics and education. After eight courses of study (i.e., four years), students are awarded a bachelor’s degree in mathematics. They serve as mathematics experts in schools and colleges.

Learning Outcomes:

Mastery of mathematical concepts: Students should be able to demonstrate a strong understanding of mathematical concepts and be able to apply them to solve problems.

Analytical skills: Students should be able to analyze problems and develop logical arguments to support their solutions.

Problem-solving skills: Students should be able to identify and solve complex problems using mathematical reasoning and techniques.

Numerical skills: Students should be able to use and manipulate numbers accurately and efficiently.

Communication skills: Students should be able to communicate mathematical concepts and solutions effectively, both orally and in writing.

Use of technology: Students should be able to use technology, such as calculators and computer software, to aid in mathematical problem-solving.

Understanding of the history and applications of mathematics: Students should have an understanding of the historical development of mathematics and its applications in fields such as science, engineering, and finance.

Overall, the learning outcomes of a mathematics department should prepare students for careers in fields such as education, research, and industry, as well as provide a strong foundation for further study in graduate or professional programs.

Study Methods:

The department uses the Bologna system. The teaching methods include lectures, reports, and practical lessons. Assessment is conducted through a semester examination, a mid-term examination, quizzes, and report writing. Moreover, during the fourth year, our students will undergo teaching practice in primary schools, where they will have the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired in a real-world setting. They will enter classrooms and teach in a practical way. This experience not only allows them to gain practical teaching skills but also prepares them to become effective and successful teachers in the future.

In general, the languages of instruction in the Department of Mathematical Sciences are English and Kurdish.

The duration of study in this department is four years, divided into eight semesters full time.
